Sri Lanka's Gesture of Goodwill: 14 Indian Fishermen Released During Modi's Visit

A Diplomatic Milestone

Colombo: In a notable act reflecting the strengthening ties between India and Sri Lanka, 14 Indian fishermen were released on Sunday during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the island.

This release came after extensive discussions between PM Modi and Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, where the persistent issue of fishermen's detentions was addressed.

During a joint press conference, the Prime Minister remarked, "We talked about the fishermen's concerns and agreed on a compassionate approach. We emphasized the urgent need to free the fishermen and return their boats."

The apprehension of Indian fishermen, mainly from Tamil Nadu, by Sri Lankan authorities for alleged illegal fishing has been a long-standing source of friction.

Since the start of 2025, reports indicate that Sri Lankan forces have detained 119 Indian fishermen along with 16 fishing vessels, raising alarms among local fishing communities and prompting calls for action.

Following the discussions, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated, "We have received confirmation that Sri Lankan authorities plan to release 11 fishermen soon, with possibly more to follow in the upcoming days."

"This topic was thoroughly discussed by both parties. As the Prime Minister highlighted, there is a strong need for a humanitarian and collaborative approach, as these issues ultimately affect the livelihoods of fishermen on both sides," Misri added.

The release of the fishermen coincides with significant diplomatic and developmental activities during PM Modi's visit, including the joint launch of India-supported railway initiatives, such as the upgraded Maho-Omanthai railway line and the newly established signaling system for the Maho-Anuradhapura route.

In a historic moment, Prime Minister Modi was awarded the prestigious Sri Lanka Mitra Vibhushan, one of the highest civilian honors in the country.

This award acknowledges not only India's unwavering support for Sri Lanka but also PM Modi's dedication to enhancing bilateral relations.

On Saturday, the two leaders also oversaw the signing and exchange of several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) covering various sectors, including infrastructure, energy, and development cooperation.

Later that evening, President Dissanayake hosted a State Banquet at the Presidential residence in honor of Prime Minister Modi.

Welcoming the Prime Minister warmly, the Sri Lankan President expressed hope that this visit would further broaden cooperation and strengthen the friendship between the two nations.

"We are renowned for our hospitality and extend a warm welcome to all our visitors. I particularly remember how warmly we receive our friends from across the Palk Strait," President Dissanayake stated.

"We look forward to seeing citizens from your country visiting our beautiful island, where they will encounter friendly communities," he added.

"We eagerly await your return, ready to welcome you back with open arms. We wish Prime Minister Narendra Modi good health and continued prosperity for the people of India, as well as the enhancement of cooperation and friendship between our two nations," the Sri Lankan President concluded.
